The hair itself is not living, and is mainly made up of a protein called keratin. The hair follicle that the hair grows from, and is secured by, is living.
A hair grows about an inch every couple of months
A hair will grow for anything from 2 to 6 years
Usually in the fifth year of growth, the hair will stop growing
After a short period of rest, the hair is released by its follicle and it falls out
The average scalp loses about 100 hairs every day and contains approximately 100,000 hairs
The follicle then starts to grow a new hair
At any time about 85 percent of the hair on our head is growing and 15 percent is resting.
