With female pattern baldness this is usually a thinning throughout the scalp and the front hairline normally remains intact. There can be a moderate loss of hair on the crown, but this rarely becomes near or total baldness. This occurs due to age, genetics and male hormones which can increase in women following menopause.
The loss of hair in women can be due to many reasons, the main causes being hormones, genes and aging.
For women hormonal changes caused by menopause can cause changes in the levels of androgens and this can affect hair production. For many women this results in the hair on their head becoming thinner and facial hair becoming coarser. Although some follicles stop producing hair, these follicles are still alive which allows for the possibility of new hair growth.
